I Crystal Horizon sono una nuova band proveniente da Kristiansand, Norvegia, costituitasi nel 2021, in piena pandemia, presso l'Università di Agder, ove i singoli membri hanno conseguito la laurea in musica. I musicisti che ne fanno parte sono in possesso di background musicali piuttosto eterogenei, dal gruppo metal (Dead Dispute), alla banda di ottoni, passando per gli organici polifonico-corali e l'esperienza di stampo etno-jazz (Balgyp).
Il quartetto esordisce con un'autoprduzione in vinile composta da 5 pezzi estremamente validi, ove viene perfettamente coniugato un rock meravigliosamente algido, finanche secco e tagliente, al prog modernista tipico di inizio millennio. 
Giusto per fornire una idea, pare che i quattro abbiano perfettamente assimilato quanto proposto dagli ottimi Gordian Knot, con quella loro eccellente mistura di prog e metal intrisa di ardente magnetismo. Nondimeno, pur sporadicamente, sono di certo richiamati i Porcupine Tree più tecnici (specie in "All My Dreams" e "Where You End", unici brani che compongono il lato b), mentre, almeno in "Stuck", la compagine fusion la fa da padrona (genere che, non a caso, si ritrova anche nella musica dal gruppo guidato dall'indimenticato Sean Malone). A livello vocale, infine, Bjørnar Skatter Kolbjørnsrud pare ispirarsi, tra gli altri, al conterraneo scandinavo Nicklas Barker, voce acuta e suadente degli svedesi Anekdoten, altro gruppo che, con riferimento alla sola compagine maliconica e decadente, pare sia stato inserito tra gli ascolti di almeno uno dei due chitarristi.
Ricercata e attenta la produzione, affidata a Chris Edrich, già al servizio, tra gli altri, di Devin Townsend.  Al riguardo, la band ha dichiarato: "In un'epoca in cui la musica progressiva è in crescita e ci sono così tante opzioni a disposizione dei nuovi ascoltatori, ci piace spingere i confini sia ritmicamente che armonicamente, e non ci limitiamo a un solo genere. Per questo motivo alcuni brani risultano piuttosto progressivi e allo stesso tempo molto atmosferici e melodici. Siamo molto orgogliosi di aver potuto collaborare con Chris su questo EP, e queste canzoni non sarebbero risultate così fantastiche senza il suo contributo durante tutto il processo!”
Infine i testi, ed è sempre l'organico che ci ragguaglia: "riguardanti principalmente i periodi della vita in cui sembra che il tempo si sia quasi fermato, sia nella vita personale che a causa degli eventi distruttivi che accadono in tutto il mondo. La sensazione di sprecare i propri sogni e la vita stessa, senza poter fare nulla al riguardo è molto presente in alcune canzoni. Ci sono anche brani in cui i testi sono molto aperti all'interpretazione da parte dell'ascoltatore."

Crystal Horizon is a new band from Kristiansand, Norway, formed in 2021, in the middle of the pandemic, at the University of Agder, where the individual members obtained their degrees in music. These musicians have rather heterogeneous musical backgrounds, from the metal group (Dead Dispute), to the brass band, passing through the polyphonic-choral ensembles and the ethno-jazz experience (Balgyp).
The quartet debuts with a self-production on vinyl composed by 5 extremely valid pieces, where wonderfully cold, even dry and sharp rock is perfectly combined with the modernist prog typical of the current millennium. Just to provide an idea, it seems that the four have perfectly assimilated what was proposed by the excellent Gordian Knot, with their excellent mixture of prog and metal imbued with ardent magnetism. Nonetheless, albeit sporadically, the more technical Porcupine Tree are certainly recalled (especially in "All My Dreams" and "Where You End", the only songs that make up the b-side), while, at least in "Stuck", the fusion team is the master (a genre which, not surprisingly, is also often found in the music of the group led by the unforgettable Sean Malone). Finally, on a vocal level, Bjørnar Skatter Kolbjørnsrud seems to be inspired by his fellow Scandinavian Nicklas Barker, the high-pitched and persuasive voice of the Swedish Anekdoten, another group that, with reference to the melancholic and decadent style, seems to have been included in the ratings at least by one of the two guitarists.
The production is refined and attentive, entrusted to Chris Edrich, already at the service of, among others, Devin Townsend. Regarding this, the band stated: "In a time where progressive music is on the rise and there are so many options available to new listeners, we like to push boundaries both rhythmically and harmonically, and we’re not caging ourselves to only one genre. Because of this some of the tracks turned out both quite progressive and at the same time very atmospheric and melodic. We are very proud to have been able to collaborate with Chris Edrich on this EP, and these songs would not have turned out this great without Chris's input throughout the process!".
Finally the lyrics, and it is always the organic that informs us: “The theme of the EP mostly deals with the periods in life where it feels like time almost stands still, both in your personal life and because of the destructive events happening around the world. The feeling of wasting your dreams and life itself, without being able to do anything about it is very present in some of the songs. There are also tracks where the lyrics are highly open to interpretation from the listener".
