Raramente emergono opere che si distinguono per la loro audacia e originalità. È proprio il caso di questo “You Are”, un'opera che abbraccia l'eleganza della musica progressive della scena Canterburiana e la libertà espressiva del jazz americano, mescolando queste influenze in un'avventura sonora senza precedenti e contaminandola – per una bulimica necessità di aggiungere sperimentazione – a Ska, oriente e classicità.

In questo viaggio musicale, ci immergiamo nelle profondità di un album che trasuda creatività, virtuosismo e un profondo rispetto per le radici anche etiche della musica, usata non solo come  intrattenimento ma anche come strumento di liberazione dai propri incubi, di comunicazione con chi si fa fatica ad avvicinare, compreso se stessi.
Il progetto Unicorn nasce già nel 1998 per opera della compositrice e cantante Tonje Ettesvoll che già da quella prima esperienza ha mostrato tutta la sua attenzione, sensibilità e coraggio, dopo una infanzia difficile fatta di abusi, di avvicinarsi all’anima della gente. E per nostra fortuna lo ha fatto con la musica. Con questo suo secondo lavoro Tonje sembra aver ulteriormente raffinato il proprio modo di condividere il proprio essere: un disco bellissimo. Dieci brani senza mai una caduta, senza mai un momento debole a partire dalla prime tracce – l’omonima “You are” e “Fear“ – e dal loro soul intinto nella new wave a formare architetture anche ardite ma piene di panorami e colori sonori di eleganti fiati a fare da raccordo tra le varie scene. Per poi passare all’originalissimo e moderno ska di “Original Sin”, tre minuti di autentico “boost” per la propria ritmica interiore, e subito dopo sprofondare nell’intimità di “12 days” una ballad in cui la voce splendida di Tonja, perfetta allo scopo, si insinua ed intreccia nei delicati archi.
La forma è quello della canzone, si intenda, ma ogni brano ci lascia il gusto della rapsodia, del “perfetto e finito” in barba alla brevità. Anche perché subito dopo arrivano altri pezzi forti, in un crescendo che sembra improbabile; basti accogliere gli archi e la progressione all’unisono del piano e della voce di Honestly oppure i brividi jazzati dal piano e tromba di “I Wonder”, oppure le atmosfere eteree di “Star” caratterizzata da una struggente arpa. Qualche momento di riposo con le più “normali” ed orecchiabili “In hell you are” e “Unreality” che, comunque, non disdegnano interessanti trovate armoniche e strumentali come ad esempio i riverberi orientaleggianti di “Unreality”.  Si conclude con “Bird”, una melodia rock dove il cinguettio di Tonja sembra voler seguire la liberatoria ritmica della batteria e della chitarra elettrica (quasi assente fino ad ora) di pari passo con le note di hammond in sottofondo. Finalmente l’intimità interiore esce, felice, libera. Un brano aperto, per la gioia di essersi riconosciuti.
Due parole anche per la registrazione, impeccabile, e per tutti gli strumentisti che hanno accompagnato Tonja nel viaggio; talentuosi sicuramente, ma anche raffinati e pienamente consapevoli dell’aspetto introspettivo che era loro richiesto.
In definitiva, “You Are” è un disco bellissimo che mi ha sorpreso e che credo potrà soddisfare sia i cultori della musica come costruzione armonica o svago sia coloro che invece cercano nella musica un'esperienza terapeutica, un viaggio per ritrovare se stessi.

Rarely do works emerge that stand out for their audacity and originality. Such is the case with “You Are“, an album that embraces the elegance of progressive music from the Canterbury scene and the expressive freedom of American jazz, blending these influences into an unprecedented sonic adventure and contaminating it – driven by an insatiable need for experimentation – with ska, eastern, and classical elements. In this musical journey, we immerse ourselves in the depths of an album that exudes creativity, virtuosity, and a profound respect for the ethical roots of music, used not only as entertainment but also as a tool for liberation from one's nightmares, for communication with those who are difficult to approach, including oneself.
The Unicorn project was born in 1998 through the work of composer and singer Tonje Ettesvoll, who already demonstrated her attention, sensitivity, and courage from that first experience, after a difficult childhood marked by abuse, in approaching people's souls. And fortunately, she did it through music. With this second work, Tonje seems to have further refined her way of sharing her being: a beautiful album. Ten tracks without a single misstep, starting from the first tracks – the eponymous “You Are“ and “Fear“ – and their soul imbued with new wave to create architectures both bold and full of scenic panoramas and sonic colors of elegant horns serving as a link between the various scenes. Then we move to the highly original and modern ska of “Original Sin“, three minutes of authentic boost for one's inner rhythm, and immediately after sinking into the intimacy of “12 days“, a ballad where Tonja's splendid voice, perfectly suited for the purpose, insinuates itself and intertwines with delicate string sections. The form is that of the song, let it be understood, but each track leaves us with the taste of the rhapsody, of the perfect and finished despite its brevity. And because immediately after come other strong pieces, in a crescendo that seems improbable; one only needs to welcome the strings and the unison progression of piano and voice in “Honestly“, or the jazzy shivers from the piano and trumpet of “I Wonder“, or the ethereal atmospheres of “Star“ characterized by a haunting harp. A few moments of rest with the more normal and catchy “In hell you are“ and “Unreality“ which, however, do not disdain interesting harmonic and instrumental findings such as the oriental reverberations of “Unreality“. It concludes with “Bird“, a rock melody where Tonja's chirping seems to want to follow the liberating rhythm of the drums and the electric guitar (almost absent until now) hand in hand with the notes of the Hammond in the background. Finally inner intimacy comes out, happy, free. An open song, for the joy of having recognized oneself.
A few words also for the impeccable recording and packaging and for all the artists who accompanied Tonja on the journey with their instruments; certainly talented, but also refined and fully aware of the introspective aspect that was required of them.
In conclusion, "You Are" is a beautiful album that surprised me and that I believe will satisfy both music enthusiasts who appreciate its harmonic construction or entertainment and those who seek in music a therapeutic experience, a journey to rediscover oneself  and to live better.
