Introduzione

Musicista, compositore e produttore discografico, Adrian Belew è noto per il suo insolito approccio impressionistico alla chitarra.
Famoso principalmente per la sua militanza in qualità di chitarrista e cantante dei King Crimson dal 1981 al 2009, ha lavorato con Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Talking Heads, Nine Inch Nails e ha capeggiato un suo gruppo personale, i Gaga, tra la fine dei '70 e l'inizio degli '80. Attualmente è membro della pop band The Bears ed è promotore di un progetto musicale aperto, denominato FLUX, in cui chiunque può contribuire - tramite la rete - all'evoluzione e alla trasformazione di brani musicali. Si tratta di un insieme di piattaforme per dispositivi mobili iOS che contengono più di 300 tracce audio e pezzi di opere d'arte che egli descrive come "non suonare la stessa cosa due volte".
Il suo recente concerto a Roma con il Power Trio, altra band di cui è leader, è stato recentemente recensito da A&B mentre qui si trova il reportage fotografico dello stesso evento.
Non da ultimo, Bill Bruford lo ha nominato nella intervista che ci ha rilasciato lo scorso anno.
Abbiamo parlato con Adrian dei Bears, di Frank Zappa, di FLUX e, naturalmente, dei King Crimson, presenti e passati.

A&B: Ciao Adrian. Sei considerato un innovatore a livello planetario per il tuo stile chitarristico che si distingue radicalmente dal tipico approccio rock/blues di gran parte dei tuoi colleghi. Puoi dirci cosa abbia suscitato in te l'interesse per sonorità "non convenzionali"?

Adrian Belew: Ciao Gianluca. Sono sempre stato affascinato dai suoni e la chitarra elettrica è in grado di proporre molte cose oltre quello che la chitarra in senso stretto può offrire. Sin da quando mi sono reso conto delle possibilità di questo strumento mi sono dedicato alla ricerca di nuove cose, nuovi suoni.
Potrei suonare dei cliché, certo, ma preferisco di gran lunga non farlo.

A&B: Spesso cambi interamente la tua attrezzatura, cercando sempre qualcosa di nuovo. Puoi parlarci di cosa usi attualmente dal vivo e di ciò che hai trovato più sorprendente?

Adrian Belew: I componenti principali del mio set up attuale sono i seguenti: Fractal Audio Axe-FX, Roland VG-99, Liquid Foot midi controller, Apple laptop, Apple iPad, Keeley compressor, Digitech Harmony Man e 3 Roland volume pedals.
Di tutti quelli elencati, l'Axe-FX è quello che indubbiamente mi sorprende di più.

A&B: Come ti trovi con la Parker? Alcuni dei nostri inviati erano al concerto del Power Trio a Milano (al Blue Note, il 9 Febbraio 2016. NdA) e hanno notato toni più freddi rispetto alla Stratocaster.

Adrian Belew: Potrei parlare per un'ora su ciò che rende la Parker Fly perfetta per me ma preferisco dire semplicemente che mi fa suonare meglio. Cosa si potrebbe chiedere di più?

A&B: Un gruppo della tua storia sono i Bears (qui la recensione del loro ultimo disco). Puoi raccontarci del gruppo e dirci di eventuali nuovi progetti?

Adrian Belew: I Bears sono quattro amici storici che amano suonare un certo tipo di musica pop.
Onestamente, al momento non c'è possibilità di suonare molto dal vivo perché non c'è abbastanza sostegno per continuare a farlo, ma potremmo fare un nuovo disco in qualsiasi momento.

A&B: Sei molto coinvolto nel Progetto Flux. Ce ne parli? Cosa c'è di nuovo in cantiere?

Adrian Belew: FLUX è la mia risposta alla domanda: cosa c'è di nuovo?
E' diverso da qualsiasi cosa fatta prima e mi fornisce la cornice ottimale per la creazione di nuova musica di arte in generale.
E' qualcosa che deve essere sperimentata per essere compresa pertanto vi risparmio i tentativi di spiegare cosa sia esattamente FLUX per me.
La cosa migliore che posso fare per indirizzare qualcuno veramente interessato è consigliarlo di scaricare l'applicazione da iTunes FLUX (per soli $ 10) e verificare di persona.
La vera novità riguardante FLUX è che siamo in procinto di raccogliere i vari lavori su una serie di CD. “Flux Volume One” è già disponibile presso il nostro negozio on-line su www.adrianbelew.net. Grazie per questa domanda!

A&B: C'è qualche possibilità, nel prossimo futuro, di vedere nuovamente i Crimson Projekct sul palco?

Adrian Belew: Tony Levin ha detto che preferirebbe non essere attivo in entrambe le incarnazioni contemporaneamente (King Crimson da un lato, Crimson Projekct dall'altro. NdA). Quello che faremo, quindi, sfugge alla mia volontà, anche se io continuo a sperare di fare qualcos'altro assieme, in futuro.

A&B: i Crimson Projekct pubblicheranno mai un album in studio?

Adrian Belew: non credo, e comunque non a breve, ma mai dire mai.

A&B: Se potessi tornare indietro nel tempo, staresti più tempo con Frank Zappa rinunciando all'esperienza con David Bowie?

Adrian Belew: avrei certamente voluto che la mia collaborazione con Frank fosse durata più a lungo, ma oggi non cambierei nulla.

A&B: In una recente intervista rilasciata al sottoscritto, parlando dei King Crimson, Bill Bruford ha detto che i tre batteristi della nuova incarnazione gli sembrano eccessivi. Cosa ne pensi al riguardo?

Adrian Belew: Io non so nulla della nuova formazione dei King Crimson. Non ho sentito, né visto, né letto una sola recensione riguardante il gruppo. Mi è stato detto che non ero più un elemento necessario per il gruppo così ho spostato i miei interessi verso un'altra direzione e sono felice di averlo fatto.

A&B: Nella stessa intervista, parlando della sua esperienza maturata in tutti i gruppi con due batteristi in organico (Genesis, Yes, King Crimson), Bill Bruford ha ricordato l'improvvisazione su "Indiscipline" e "Waiting Man" con te ("Mi è piaciuto improvvisare nei King Crimson su "Indiscipline" con Adrian Belew, che manteneva il ritmo costantemente con il suo drum kit. Anche "Waiting Man" era grandiosa, con i pad elettronici"). Cosa pensi della tua esperienza alla batteria con Bill?

Adrian Belew: anche dopo cinque anni dal suo ritiro, Bill Bruford rimane il mio batterista preferito. Mi ha generosamente insegnato cose che continuo ad applicare al mio modo di suonare. E' una grande persona e un vero amico.

A&B: Ritengo che “A Scarcity Of Miracles (A King Crimson Projekct)” di Jakszyk, Fripp & Collins with Levin & Harrison, sia il punto più basso, artisticamente parlando, della discografia dei Crimson. Ci sono ottimi musicisti che suonano in quell'album, ma a mio parere, la musica risulta povera e anonima. Penso che questo sia dovuto alla tua assenza. E infatti, quell'album è il primo, dopo 30 anni, senza il tuo contributo. Cosa ne pensi? Hai avuto modo di ascoltarlo?

Adrian Belew: Ho già risposto a questa domanda poco sopra.
(nota dell'intervistatore: Adrian fornisce la stessa risposta a due domande diverse: l'album “A Scarcity Of Miracles” fu pubblicato quando il chitarrista era formalmente nei Crimson e quindi era ipotizzabile che l'avesse quantomeno ascoltato. A&B ha recensito l'album due volte. Qui in termini positivi, e qui negativamente)

A&B: I "nuovi" Crimson sono pienamente indirizzati al vecchio repertorio. Sarebbe mai accaduto con te?

Adrian Belew: Probabilmente no. Da quello che mi viene riportato per interposta persona, Robert è stato corretto nel dirmi che non ero la persona adatta per quello che stanno facendo al momento.

A&B: Perché i King Crimson con te non hanno mai suonato vecchi pezzi (ad eccezione di "Red") ?

Adrian Belew: siamo stati più interessati a creare nuova musica piuttosto che riproporre quella vecchia. Se fossi oggi nella band, creare nuova musica sarebbe ancora la mia priorità.

A&B: Qual è il tuo album preferito dei Crimson (non necessariamente con te come membro) e perché?

Adrian Belew: tra tutti quelli nei quali ho suonato, “Discipline” è stato il disco migliore che abbiamo mai realizzato e anche il mio preferito in assoluto. Di quelli nei quali non ho suonato, mi piacciono “In the Court Of Crimson King” e “Red”, che reputo il più bello.

A&B: Quale invece il peggiore (non necessariamente con te come membro) e perché?

Adrian Belew: Non ritengo che ci sia un brutto album dei King Crimson. Posso dirti che, personalmente, la mia esperienza peggiore è stata la realizzazione dell'album “Beat”, ma il disco mi piace tuttora. Sono orgoglioso di aver fatto parte dei King Crimson.

Introduction:

Musician, songwriter and record producer, Adrian Belew is noted for his unusual, impressionistic approach to guitar playing. He is perhaps best known for his work as a guitarist and vocalist of King Crimson from 1981 to 2009. In addition, he is also in the more straightforward pop band The Bears and fronted his own band, GaGa, in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He has worked with Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Talking Heads and Nine Inch Nails. His latest project is FLUX, a set of iOS mobile app platforms called respectively FLUX by belew™ and FLUX:FX. FLUX by belew™, which contain over 300 audio tracks and pieces of artwork that Adrian describes as "never playing the same twice".
Last but not least, Bill Bruford talked about Adrian in this interview (in English. Here).
We talked with Adrian about The Bears, Frank Zappa, FLUX and, of course, King Crimson, past and present.

Interview

A&B: Ciao Adrian. You're worldwide known as a guitar innovator for your style which seems to avoid some rock/blues clichés, preferring more "unconventional" sounds. What did inspire you finding such a personal way of playing guitar?

Adrian Belew: Ciao Gianluca. The electric guitar has the ability to sound like many things other than guitar. I have always been fascinated with sounds. ever since I first realized the possibilities the guitar holds I been devoted to finding new things to do with it. I can play the cliches but I prefer not to.

A&B: You often chanche entirely your gear, always looking for something new. Can you tell us what are you using to play live and which device you found most surprising?

Adrian Belew: Here are the main components of my current set up: Fractal Audio Axe-FX, Roland VG-99, Liquid Foot midi controller, Apple laptop, Apple iPad, Keeley compressor, Digitech Harmony Man, and 3 Roland volume pedals. of all of those devices the Axe-FX surprises me most.

A&B: Please, tell us something about your Parker guitar. Some of us, were at your gig with The Power Trio in Milan (at the Blue Note, Feb 09, 2016) and noticed colder tones than your Stratocaster. How do you find yourself with the Parker?

Adrian Belew: a: I could talk for an hour about what makes the Parker Fly perfect for me but let me simply say: it makes me play better! What more could you ask for?

A&B: An important band in you career is “The Bears”. Can you tell us anything about them? Any new material on the way?

Adrian Belew: The Bears are four life-long like-minded friends who enjoy making a certain kind of pop music together. We are no longer performing live because there is not enough support to continue doing so, but we could make a new record anytime.

A&B: You are deeply involved with the “Flux” project. Please tell us something about it. How is it going on....any news?

Adrian Belew: FLUX is my answer to the question: what's new? It is unlike anything done before. It gives me the optimum framework for creating new music and art. It's something which must be experienced to be understood so I will refrain from trying to explain FLUX. The best thing for someone interested is to download the FLUX app from iTunes (for only $10) and see for themselves. A&B: Is there any change, in the next future, to see again the Crimson Projekct on stage?

Adrian Belew: Tony Levin said he would prefer not to be active in both bands at the same time. what we do next, if anything, is therefore out of my hands. I hope we do more together.

A&B: Will ever The Crimson Project edit a studio album?

Adrian Belew: Not anytime soon but it's always possible.

A&B: If you could go back in time, would you be any longer with Frank Zappa renouncing to the experience with David Bowie?

Adrian Belew: even though I wish my tenure with Frank could have lasted longer, I wouldn't change a thing.

A&B: In a recent interview , talking about King Crimson, Bill Bruford told that he hasn’t seen the band with three drummers, but that seems a bit excessive to him. What do you think about the new incarnation?

Adrian Belew: I don't know anything about the new King Crimson. I haven't heard it nor seen it nor even read a single review of it. I was told I wasn't needed so I have moved on with things I am part of and I am happy.

A&B: In the same interview, talking about his experience with bands featuring two drummers, he remembered the improvisation over King Crimson’s "Indiscipline" and "Waiting Man" with you (“I loved improvising over King Crimson’s "Indiscipline" with Adrian Belew keeping the steady simple drum kit beat. "Waiting Man" was great too, on the pitched electronic pads"). What about your experience on drums with Bill?

Adrian Belew: even five years after his retirement Bill Bruford remains my favorite drummer. he generously taught me things I continue to use in my playing and he's a great person and friend.

A&B: I consider “A Scarcity Of Miracles (A King Crimson Projekct)” by Jakszyk, Fripp & Collins with Levin & Harrison, the lowest point, artistically speaking, of the Crimson discography. There are excellent musicians playing there, but in my opinion, it results poor and a bit anonymous. In my opinion, this was due to your absence. And in fact, that album is the first, after 30 years, without your contribution. What do you think about it? Did you listen to it?

Adrian Belew: I answered that question above.

A&B: The "new" Crimson are fully involved in the old repertoire. Could it have happened with you?

Adrian Belew: Probably not. From what I know secondhand, Robert was correct in telling me I am not right for what they are doing now.

A&B: Why the Crimson with you did not play old tracks (except "Red")?

Adrian Belew: We were more interested in creating new music than recreating older music. If I were in the band today new music would still be my priority.

A&B: What's your favourite Crimson's album (not necessarily with you as a member) and why?

Adrian Belew: “Discipline” was our best effort and my favorite of the records I'm part of. Of the records I had no part in I like “In The Court Of The Crimson King” and “Red” best.

A&B: What's the worst (not necessarily with you as a member) and why?

Adrian Belew: I haven't heard a bad record from King Crimson. My personal worst experience was the making of the “Beat” album, but I stilI enjoy the record. I am proud to have been part of King Crimson.
